Why Base Material Matters

A proper base is crucial for artificial turf longevity. It provides:

  • Proper drainage to prevent water pooling
  • A stable, level surface for turf installation
  • Prevention of weed growth from below
  • Long-term durability and performance

Recommended Materials

For South Texas installations, we recommend:

  • Crushed Limestone: Excellent drainage, compacts well
  • Decomposed Granite: Natural look, good stability
  • Caliche Mix: Local material, cost-effective base layer

Installation Depth

Standard depths for different applications:

  • Residential lawns: 2-3 inches total
  • Pet areas: 3-4 inches for extra drainage
  • Sports fields: 4-6 inches for impact absorption
  • Putting greens: 3-4 inches with sand layer

Pro Installation Tips

  1. Excavate existing soil to proper depth
  2. Install weed barrier fabric
  3. Add base material in 2-inch layers
  4. Compact each layer with a plate compactor
  5. Grade for 1-2% slope away from structures

RGV Turf Recommendation

We suggest a base of 1-2 inches of crushed limestone or granite atop 2-3 inches of compacted caliche mix, creating a level and sloped surface suitable for artificial grass.

How to Calculate Manually

  1. Length x Width = Square Feet
  2. Square Feet ÷ "X" = Cubic Yards (match depth with number in table below)
  3. To convert Cubic Yards to Tons: Cubic Yards x 1.4 = Tons
  4. To convert Tons to Cubic Yards: Tons ÷ 1.4 = Cubic Yards

*1.4 is a rule of thumb for most sand/gravel products (1 yard = 2,800#)

Example 1:
2,000 sq ft bunker at 6" deep
2,000 ÷ 54 = 37 Cubic Yards
37 x 1.4 = 52 Tons
Example 2:
Cart path 1,200' x 4' x 3" deep
4,800 ÷ 108 = 44.5 cubic yards
44.5 x 1.4 = 63 Tons
